Built between 1927 and 1955, it was begun in the interwar period and funded by the autonomous Silesian Parliament of the Second Polish Republic. Designed by Franciszek Mączyński and Zygmunt Gawlik in Neoclassical style, it is faced in stone over a brick structure and is known for the high quality of its acoustics. Pope John Paul II visited in 1983, and his throne is displayed in the chapel devoted to him.
