Located in Salvador, Bahia, the Church and Convent of Our Lady of the Conception of Lapa is an 18th-century Baroque and Rococo structure built in 1734. Part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia, the church gained historical prominence during the Brazilian independence movement when Sister Joana Angélica was killed by bayonet at the convent's south portal in 1822 while resisting a Portuguese troop invasion. The interior is celebrated as one of the finest Rococo compositions in Salvador, preserving its original 18th-century Baroque construction with remarkable fidelity. Notable features include a complex high altar, azulejos adorning the chancel, and a well-preserved nave ceiling painting. Recognized as a heritage asset of Portuguese influence, the church was listed as a historic structure by IPHAN in 1938.
