Located in the Madalena parish of Lisbon, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha is a National Monument exemplifying Manueline architecture. Originally the Church of the Misericórdia, it was repurposed in 1770 by order of King Joseph and reconstructed by Pombaline architect Francisco António Ferreira, with the collaboration of Honorato José Correia. The rebuilding ingeniously preserved and reoriented earlier medieval elements—including a central column, two Manueline windows, and a relief of the Misericórdia—transforming the lateral entrance into the new principal entrance and relocating the lateral chapel to serve as the presbytery. The main façade presents an ornate Manueline portico crowned by a triangular pediment, its tympanum depicting the Virgin of the Misericórdia flanked by figures of nobles and clergy. Comparable Manueline-style windows frame this composition, evoking the architectural splendor of the Monastery of the Jerónimos.
