The Church of Santo Tomé stands in Toledo's historical center, founded in the aftermath of King Alfonso VI's reconquest of the city. Originally constructed on the site of an eleventh-century mosque, the church is first documented in the twelfth century, when the former Islamic building was repurposed for Christian worship without significant alteration. In the early fourteenth century, as the structure fell into disrepair, Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo, Lord of Orgaz, undertook a complete rebuilding, during which the old minaret was converted into a bell tower in Mudéjar style. The church's international renown owes largely to its housing of El Greco's monumental painting *The Burial of the Count of Orgaz*, displayed in the church's interior. Designated as a bien de interés cultural, the building exemplifies the architectural palimpsest of medieval Toledo, where Islamic, Mudéjar, and Christian traditions converge.
