The Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula, located within the Inner Ward of the Tower of London, is a Gothic church built in 1520 as the principal place of worship for residents of the fortress. Its name derives from the biblical account of Saint Peter's imprisonment, and it served as the second chapel established in the Tower, following the earlier St John's in the White Tower. The building features a distinctive short tower at its west end crowned by a lantern bell-cote, with a nave and shorter north aisle illuminated by cusped windows characteristic of Tudor design. As a royal peculiar under direct monarchical jurisdiction, the chapel is perhaps most renowned as the burial place of some of history's most prominent Tower prisoners, including Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, Lady Jane Grey, and Sir Thomas More.
