The Church of the Nativity, also called the Basilica of the Nativity, stands in Bethlehem in the West Bank, Palestine, and is built of rock. Constantine the Great commissioned the original basilica shortly after his mother Helena's visit to the region, and it was dedicated on 31 May 339. Rebuilt under Byzantine Emperor Justinian, who added a porch and replaced the octagonal sanctuary with a cruciform transept, the church stands over the grotto traditionally held to be Jesus's birthplace. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.
