The Citadel of Besançon is a 17th-century fortress in Franche-Comté, France, designed by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban and begun in 1668. It stands on Mount Saint-Etienne, a hill forming the neck of an oxbow of the Doubs river and overlooking the old quarter. UNESCO listed it in 2008, together with nearby Fort Griffon, as a World Heritage Site, and it now houses several museums.
