The Conciergerie is a former courthouse and prison on the western end of the Île de la Cité in Paris's 1st arrondissement, beneath the Palais de Justice. It originated as part of the medieval royal Palais de la Cité, and two large medieval halls survive from that complex. During the French Revolution, 2,781 prisoners, including Marie Antoinette, were held, tried and sentenced there before being sent to be guillotined. It is now a classified historical monument and museum.
