The Deichtorhallen in Hamburg-Mitte is one of Europe's largest centers for contemporary art and photography. Its two historical halls, built between 1911 and 1913, are notable industrial structures of the transition between Art Nouveau and 20th-century design, with open steel-and-glass frameworks. In 2005 the southern hall became the House of Photography, conceived decisively by F. C. Gundlach.
