Demolished synagogue in Zemun
Zemun, Serbia

No longer standing
Demolished or destroyed.
A Romanesque Revival synagogue erected in Zemun in 1871, this building served the city's Jewish community until its demolition in 1947. The structure exemplified the architectural style favored for Jewish houses of worship in Central Europe during the mid-nineteenth century, when Romanesque Revival elements—rounded arches, decorative brickwork, and robust masonry forms—conveyed permanence and cultural integration. Little detail survives about the building's specific design features or interior ornamentation, but its presence in Zemun reflected the city's significant Jewish population during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
