The District of Columbia War Memorial stands on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Completed in 1931 by architect Nathan C. Wyeth, it is a marble, domed, peristyle Doric temple in the Greek Revival style, designed to serve as a bandstand for public events. It honors more than 26,000 District residents and citizens who served in World War I, including the 499 who died, and their names are listed alphabetically, without regard to rank, gender, race, or national origin, a practice unusual for its time.
