The Douaumont Ossuary stands 46 meters high in the Verdun battlefield near Fleury-devant-Douaumont, France, a solemn Art Deco memorial designed by Jacques Hardy, Léon Azéma, and Max Edrei. Built beginning in 1920 on the initiative of Bishop Charles Ginisty of Verdun, the structure holds the skeletal remains of soldiers who fell during the Battle of Verdun in World War I. The ossuary is positioned immediately adjacent to the Fleury-devant-Douaumont National Necropolis and has been designated both a classified historical monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
