Elmina Castle, also called Fort St. George, stands in Elmina in Ghana's Central Region. The Portuguese built it in 1482 as Castelo de São Jorge da Mina, the first trading post on the Gulf of Guinea and the oldest extant European building in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Dutch West India Company seized it in 1637, and it became a major stop in the Atlantic slave trade. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
