Essen Minster, also known since 1958 as Essen Cathedral, stands on the Burgplatz in the centre of Essen, Germany, and is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Essen. It was formerly the collegiate church of an abbey of secular canonesses founded around 845 by Altfrid, Bishop of Hildesheim. Its Gothic hall church, built after 1275 in light sandstone, was reconstructed after World War II, while the octagonal Ottonian westwork and crypt survive. The treasury holds the Golden Madonna, the oldest fully sculptural figure of Mary north of the Alps.
