The Eyüp Sultan Mosque, an Ottoman architectural work in Istanbul's Eyüp district, has an inception date of 1458, though its present building dates from the beginning of the 19th century. Its complex includes a mausoleum said to mark the burial place of Ebu Eyüp el-Ansari, a standard-bearer and companion of the Prophet Muhammad. Because of this sanctity, new Ottoman sultans came here to be girded with the Sword of Osman at the start of their reigns, and it remains a popular pilgrimage destination.
