Flint Castle, in Flint, Flintshire, was the first of a series of castles built during King Edward I's campaign to conquer Wales, begun in 1277 and attributed to James of Saint George. Its site was chosen for strategic reasons: it lay one day's march from Chester, could be supplied along the River Dee, and had a nearby ford to England usable at low tide. It is a National Monument of Wales, a Grade I listed building, and a scheduled monument.
