Florence Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower, stands in Piazza del Duomo in Florence, Italy, as the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Florence. Begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to a design by Arnolfo di Cambio, it was completed by 1436 under a dome by Filippo Brunelleschi, whose masonry dome remains the largest ever constructed. Its exterior is faced with green, pink and white polychrome marble.
