Fort Provintia, also known as Chihkan Tower, was a Dutch outpost built in 1653 at Sakam (near present-day Tainan) during the Dutch colonization of Taiwan, situated about two miles east of Anping. The fort was surrendered to Koxinga during the Siege of Fort Zeelandia in 1662, then damaged by rebellion and earthquakes in the eighteenth century before being rebuilt under Qing rule in the nineteenth century. The site's name derives from the aboriginal village of Sakam, which developed into modern Tainan and eventually became the island's capital as Taiwan-fu. The fort's significance extends beyond its architecture to its historical documentation, including a library containing dictionaries and business records that preserve the Siraya language spoken by native inhabitants during Dutch rule. Now designated a country-level monument, the site is undergoing redevelopment into a museum by Taiwanese architecture studio HOU x LIN, with completion anticipated for 2024.
