The Fortifications of Heraklion are a system of defensive walls encircling the city of Heraklion, formerly Candia, on Crete, Greece. Built in the Renaissance style from 1462, the walls replaced earlier medieval defenses and were completely rebuilt by the Republic of Venice. They withstood a 21-year siege, the second longest in history, before the city fell to the Ottomans in 1669. The walls remain largely intact and are considered among the best preserved Venetian fortifications in Europe.
