Freedom Plaza is a postmodern open space in Northwest Washington, D.C., completed in 1980 and located near 14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, adjacent to Pershing Park. Originally known as Western Plaza, the plaza features an inlay that partially depicts Pierre Charles L'Enfant's foundational plan for the city. Administered by the National Park Service as part of the Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site, the plaza is bordered by significant civic and cultural landmarks: the John A. Wilson Building, seat of the District of Columbia government; the historic National Theatre, which has hosted every U.S. president since 1835; three large hotels to the north and west; and the Old Post Office building, now housing the Waldorf Astoria Washington D.C., to the southeast.
