Fremantle Prison, also called Fremantle Gaol, is a former prison and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Fremantle, Western Australia. Built in 1855 in the Neoclassical style from limestone, it first held convicts transported from Britain before the colonial government took it over in 1886 for locally sentenced prisoners. It closed in 1991, replaced by the maximum-security Casuarina Prison, and the site is now a museum.
