The General Post Office on St Martin's Le Grand in London, a Greek Revival building designed by Robert Smirke, opened in 1829 as England's first purpose-built post office and headquarters of the General Post Office. It served as the capital's main post office and housed the offices of the Postmaster General until its internal space proved inadequate, and it was demolished in 1912.
