The George Sherman Union at Boston University is a Brutalist structure that opened in Spring 1963 as the institution's student center and community hub. Named after Boston industrialist and university benefactor George Sherman, the building was modeled after similar student centers in Midwestern universities. Originally featuring a ten-lane bowling alley in its basement, the Union now houses administrative offices, a nine-restaurant food court, multiple auditoriums, and study spaces, alongside the BU Scarlet Safewalk service. Adjacent to Mugar Memorial Library, the GSU serves as the gathering place for students to organize events, study, and participate in cultural and recreational programs. The building underwent significant renovations in summer 2010 and again in 2020, when the Union Hall food court and study lounges were updated. Environmental improvements have included converting the adjacent East Campus Boiler Plant from oil to natural gas and enhancing wireless infrastructure and sustainability features.
