George Square is a city square in the south of Edinburgh's city centre, Scotland, adjacent to the Meadows. Laid out in 1766 outside the overcrowded Old Town, it was once a popular residential area for the city's better-off citizens and is associated with Georgian architecture. In the 1960s much of it was redeveloped by the University of Edinburgh, despite protests from the Cockburn Association and the Georgian Group of Edinburgh, and most of its buildings now belong to the university.
