Göttweig Abbey is a Benedictine monastery near Krems in Lower Austria, founded in 1083 by Altmann, Bishop of Passau. A fire in 1580 largely destroyed it, and a second fire in 1718 required another rebuilding in the Baroque style, with Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt associated with the architecture. Its best-known feature is the largest Baroque staircase in Austria, decorated with a fresco considered a masterpiece of its era.
