Located at 2 Lermontovskii Avenue in Saint Petersburg, the Grand Choral Synagogue is the third-largest synagogue in Europe, completed in 1888 and consecrated in December 1893. Designed by architects Lev Bakhman, Ivan Shaposhnikov, and Aleksei Malov, the building exemplifies an eclectic blend of Moorish Revival and Byzantine Revival styles characteristic of neo-Mudéjar architecture. Serving an Orthodox Jewish congregation, it was designated in 2000 as the Edmond J. Safra Grand Choral Synagogue in honor of the philanthropist, and is registered as a federal cultural heritage site and architectural monument of national importance in Russia.
