Designed by architect Guido Ferrazza and completed in 1938, the Great Mosque of Asmara stands in the center of Eritrea's capital city as one of its three most prominent religious buildings. Built on the initiative of Benito Mussolini to appeal to the Muslim population comprising roughly half the local population, the mosque exemplifies rationalist architectural principles. Located within Asmara City, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017 as the world's first modernist city, the Great Mosque of Asmara joins the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and Enda Mariam Coptic Cathedral as a defining landmark of the city's distinctive architectural character.
