The Great Mosque of Xi'an, located in the eastern Xi'an Muslim Quarter of Shaanxi province, is one of China's largest premodern mosques. Founded in 742 CE during the Tang dynasty—when Xi'an was the world's largest city—the mosque received its present form largely during the Ming dynasty in 1392 under Emperor Hongwu. Its distinctive plan reflects Chinese architectural traditions rather than those of mosques beyond China: it features a symmetrical east-west axis with five courtyards (sahns), culminating in a prayer hall at the western end. The complex now encompasses more than twenty buildings across approximately 1.23 hectares and remains both an active place of worship and a major tourist destination, holding designation as a National-Level Major Historical and Cultural Site.
