The Greek Theatre of Cyrene, located on the north slope of the Acropolis in Jabal al Akhdar, Libya, was the largest and oldest of five known theatres in the ancient city of Cyrene. Originally constructed as a standard Greek theatre probably in the late sixth century BC, it stood west of the Sanctuary of Apollo and exemplified Hellenistic architectural principles. The structure underwent multiple phases of renovation over its long history before being converted into a Roman amphitheatre in the second century AD, reflecting the evolving tastes and engineering practices of its successive occupants.
