Gripsholm Castle stands by Lake Mälaren in Mariefred, Södermanland, in the municipality of Strängnäs, about 60 km west of Stockholm. Begun in 1537 in the Renaissance style and attributed to Fredrik Nussdorffer, Henrik von Cöllen and Erik Palmstedt, it has belonged to the Swedish royal family since Gustav I Vasa. It served as a royal residence until the 18th century and is now a museum, still considered a palace at the King's disposal and part of the Crown palaces of Sweden.
