The Torre Guinigi stands in Lucca, Tuscany, central Italy, and is a typical example of local Romanesque-Gothic architecture. Dating from the latter half of the 14th century, when wealthy families built towers within the city walls as status symbols, it was raised by the Guinigi family, merchants and bankers, and is one of the few such towers still standing in Lucca. It is known for the holm oaks growing on its summit, and in 1968 the family's descendants donated it to the city, which now opens it to the public.
