Hampton Court Palace is a Grade I listed royal palace in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, about 12 miles southwest and upstream of central London on the River Thames. Building began in 1514 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, and Henry VIII later made it one of his favoured residences. William III's early 1690s rebuilding, intended to rival Versailles, destroyed much of the Tudor palace, leaving Tudor and Baroque styles side by side, unified by pink brick.
