The Harold Washington Library Center, completed in 1991, serves as the central library for the Chicago Public Library System at 400 South State Street, just south of the Loop 'L'. Designed by Hammond, Beeby and Babka in the postmodern architectural style, the granite and brick structure contains approximately 756,000 square feet of workspace, with a total footprint of roughly 972,000 square feet when including its rooftop winter-garden event space. The building succeeded the city's nineteenth-century central library after more than a decade and is fully ADA compliant. It is named in honor of former Mayor Harold Washington.
