This war memorial in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, stands beside the Great North Road near the gates of Hatfield House and the railway station. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker and unveiled in 1921, it commemorates 139 men from Hatfield killed in the First World War, with additional names inscribed following the Second World War. The memorial features Baker's characteristic Portland stone cross with an octagonal section, standing on an octagonal base and decorated with roses and lilies representing England and France. The cross occupies the centre of a grass lawn within a garden enclosed by brick walls and a yew hedge. A brick pavilion to the north contains Portland stone tablets listing the names of the dead; its three round-headed arches face the cross, though they were later closed with metal railings. Baker's design became one of his signature approaches to municipal memorials, distinct from the Cross of Sacrifice he had proposed to the Imperial War Graves Commission. The memorial is Grade II* listed and forms part of a national collection of 24 war memorials by Baker designated by Historic England in 2017.
