Hereford Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin and Saint Ethelbert the King, is a Church of England cathedral in Hereford, England, and the seat of the bishop of Hereford. Its present building was begun in 1079, on a site that has held a place of worship since the 8th century or earlier, and it combines substantial Norman and Gothic work. The cathedral is a Grade I listed building and has the largest library of chained books in the world, whose most famous treasure is the Mappa Mundi, a medieval world map created around 1300.
