Hietzing is a metro station on Line U4 of the Vienna U-Bahn, set in a cut beside the canalised Vienna River at the north-western corner of the Schönbrunn Palace grounds. It opened in 1898 as part of the Wiener Stadtbahn, designed by Otto Wagner, and became a U-Bahn station in 1981. Straddling the eastern end of the platforms is the Hofpavillon, a Wagner pavilion with an Art Nouveau interior, intended as a private entrance for Emperor Franz Joseph, who used it only twice. It is now open to visitors as a site of the Vienna Museum.
