Historic RittenhouseTown in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, preserves the remains of an early industrial settlement centered on the first paper mill in British North America, built in 1690 by William Rittenhouse and his son Nicholas along Paper Mill Run. Located off Lincoln Drive near Wissahickon Avenue in Fairmount Park, the Georgian district originally comprised up to forty-five buildings; six structures survive today. Designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1992, the site documents a pivotal moment in colonial manufacturing and early American enterprise.
