Holy Mother of God Cathedral, located in Strovolos, Nicosia, is the Armenian Apostolic cathedral of Cyprus, built in traditional Armenian architectural style with a distinctive central octagonal dome and smaller bell dome. Constructed following the loss of the Armenian community's medieval Notre Dame de Tyre cathedral in Turkish-occupied Nicosia after 1963–1964, the new cathedral was realized through support from the World Council of Churches, the Evangelical Church of Westphalia, and the Cyprus government. Its foundation stone was laid on 25 September 1976 by Archbishop Makarios III and officially inaugurated on 21–22 November 1981. The building was renovated in 2005 and again in 2008, with many of its icons created by Lebanese-Armenian painter Zohrab Keshishian. The cathedral anchors a broader Armenian cultural complex that includes the Nicosia Nareg Armenian School, the Armenian Prelature building, an Armenian Genocide monument, and various commemorative sculptures and monuments.
