Santa Cruz, United States

Demolished or destroyed.
The Hotel Metropole was a hotel in Santa Cruz, California, built in 1908 in the late Italianate style. Its pressed-metal ornamentation replaced the costlier plaster work that Victorian buildings often imitated, and its four pediments above the third-story windows and acanthus-design cornices were singled out as particularly handsome. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, it was severely damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and demolished.
