The Illinois State Capitol in Springfield houses the legislative and executive branches of Illinois government and is the sixth building to serve as the state capitol since statehood in 1818. Designed by the Chicago firm Cochrane and Garnsey in French Renaissance and Italianate styles, its construction began on March 11, 1868, and was completed twenty years later at a cost of $4.5 million. Its cross-shaped plan has four equal wings, and its central rotunda and dome are clad in zinc alloy that gives a silvery finish and does not weather or corrode.
