Located in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, the Ishinomori Manga Museum opened in 2001 to celebrate the life and works of manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori, a native of the city. Designed by Nihon Sekkei, the museum occupies a striking position on the bay with views toward the Pacific Ocean and Tashirojima, known as "Manga Island." The building was damaged during the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami but, after repairs, reopened in November 2012. A renewal ceremony in 2013 drew notable figures connected to Ishinomori's creative legacy, including actors Hiroshi Fujioka and Yuki Sato and singer Ichirou Mizuki.
