Itter Castle is a 19th-century castle in the village of Itter in Tyrol, Austria. In 1943 the Nazis converted it into a prison for French VIPs. In early May 1945, shortly before the end of the war in Europe, U.S. Army troops, German Wehrmacht soldiers, Austrian Resistance fighters, and the prisoners themselves fought side by side against the Waffen-SS in the Battle for Castle Itter.
