Kajaani Castle is a ruined granite fortress on an islet in the Kajaaninjoki river in Kajaani, Finland. Begun by Charles IX of Sweden in 1604 to guard the Kainuu region, which had been ceded to Sweden under the Treaty of Teusina in 1595, it was the last medieval-style stone castle built in Sweden. Gustav II Adolf halted construction in 1619, and Russian forces destroyed it with explosives in 1716, leaving only roofless ruins.
