The Kashveti Church of St. George stands in central Tbilisi on Rustaveli Avenue, directly across from the Parliament building. Built between 1904 and 1910 by architect Leopold Bilfeldt, the church employs Byzantine architecture inspired by the medieval Samtavisi Cathedral. Constructed on the site of an earlier brick church commissioned by the Amilakhvari family in 1753, Kashveti was sponsored by Georgian nobility and bourgeoisie, with significant ornamental contributions from N. Agladze. The church's interior frescoes were painted by the prominent Georgian artist Lado Gudiashvili in 1947. The building's name derives from Georgian words meaning "stone" and "to give birth," referencing a medieval legend about the 6th-century monk David of Gareja.
