Kaunas Fortress is the surviving remains of a fortress complex in Kaunas, Lithuania, built and renovated between 1882 and 1915 by the Russian Empire to guard its western borders. Designated a "first-class" fortress in 1887, it covered 65 km² during World War I and is the most complete surviving example of a Russian Empire fortress. During World War II, parts of it were used by Nazi Germany for detention, interrogation, and execution, and its Ninth Fort now houses a museum and memorial to the Jewish victims.
