Kilkenny Castle stands in County Kilkenny, Ireland, where it was built in 1260 to control a fording point of the River Nore and the junction of several routeways. Originally a symbol of Norman occupation, it had four large circular corner towers and a massive ditch, part of which survives on the Parade. In 1967 the 6th Marquess of Ormonde sold it for £50 to the Castle Restoration Committee for the people of Kilkenny, and it is now managed by the Office of Public Works, with its gardens and parkland open to the public.
