King John's Castle, also called Limerick Castle, stands beside the River Shannon on King's Island in Limerick, Ireland, and is a national monument of Ireland. Wikipedia dates its construction to 1200 on the orders of King John of England, and the site was home to Vikings by 922. Some external walls, towers and fortifications survive, and the castle, now a military museum, was badly damaged in a 1642 siege when Protestants fleeing the Irish Rebellion of 1641 held it against an Irish Confederate force.
