Kong Hock Keong, the Goddess of Mercy Temple on Pitt Street in George Town, Penang, is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia, built in 1800. Originally dedicated to Mazu, the sea deity, it was repurposed by 1824 to honor Guan Yin, the Taoist and Buddhist Bodhisattva of Mercy, following the influx of Chinese migrants after George Town's founding in 1786. The temple served as a crucial neutral ground between the rival Cantonese and Hokkien communities. Constructed in traditional Chinese architectural style, it retains deep religious significance for local devotees and remains a focal point for major Chinese festivals, including annual celebrations for Guan Yin and the Jade Emperor's Birthday, drawing pilgrims from across Southeast Asia.
