Krásna Hôrka Castle stands on a hilltop overlooking the village of Krásnohorské Podhradie near Rožňava in Slovakia's Košice Region. Though built in Gothic style around 1400, the castle's history extends further back—the first recorded mention dates to 1333. By 1961, it had been designated a National Cultural Monument of the Slovak Republic and was considered among the country's best-preserved castles. This status changed dramatically on 10 March 2012, when the castle sustained extensive damage from a fire started by carelessly discarded cigarettes that ignited surrounding grass.
