The Kyiv Opera House, officially the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine named after Taras Shevchenko, stands at the junction of Volodymyrska Street and Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street in Kyiv. Designed by the Russian architect Victor Schröter, it opened in 1901 after a fire destroyed its predecessor, the City Theatre, in 1896. Its exterior is in the Renaissance Revival style, and it is protected as an architectural monument of local significance.
